How do I use my Capital on Tap card abroad?

You can use your Capital on Tap card almost anywhere in the world without notifying us or paying foreign exchange fees. Your card works internationally just as it does at home.

Where can I use my Capital on Tap card internationally?

Your card works at any merchant that accepts Visa credit cards; however, in some cases, a transaction may be declined due to merchant category code (MCC) restrictions. These restrictions apply to certain business types and are set by card networks and issuers.

Are there fees for using my card abroad?

No, Capital on Tap does not charge foreign exchange fees and transactions are processed using the Visa exchange rate.

Your statement will show:

  • The original transaction amount in the foreign currency
  • The final amount charged in your home currency (GBP)

Why does the foreign currency amount differ from the final charge?

In some cases, the amount shown at the time of purchase may differ from the final amount charged. This is because some merchants place an authorisation (a temporary hold) to confirm your card is active and has sufficient available funds.

Once the transaction is completed and cleared, the final amount may be higher or lower than the authorisation. This can happen if the merchant submits a different final amount, or due to exchange rate fluctuations between the authorisation and settlement stages.

What should I do if a transaction amount does not match my receipt?

If the charged amount does not match your receipt, contact our Customer Support team through chat in the app.

Do I need to activate my card before using it abroad?

Yes, your card must be activated before it can be used, including for international transactions.

Do I need to notify Capital on Tap before travelling?

No, you don't need to notify us before travelling abroad.

How do I calculate the correct foreign currency amount?

You can use the Visa Exchange Rate Calculator to estimate the equivalent currency value of your transaction. To use the calculator:

  1. Set the domestic currency to GBP and enter the cleared amount shown in your app or web portal.
  2. Set the foreign currency to the country where the purchase was made.
  3. Set the date to the date your transaction was authorised.
  4. Set the bank fee to 0%.

The Visa calculator may show a slightly different figure to your original receipt due to rounding differences. The merchant receipt is the only definitive record of the foreign currency amount paid.
